Neurotune, based in Schlieren (Zurich), Switzerland, was incorporated in January 2005 as a spin-off from Prionics AG.
Neurotune develops small-molecules into potential drugs to treat Neurological Disorders including muscles pathologies.
Neurotune’s original R&D program focused on a clearly defined proprietary novel drug target, the synaptic serine protease neurotrypsin. Neurotrypsin plays a major role in the pathogenic mechanism of age-related muscle atrophy Sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is being recognized as an increasing cause of disability in the aging world population. In a project synergistic to development of the first causative therapeutic for Sarcopenia Neurotune aims at establishing a molecule as a biomarker into a diagnostic test to be given practitioners at hand.
Neurotune’s other area of indications is the field of neuropathic pain (NP). NP results from direct damage to the nervous system following metabolic derangements, infections, injuries, toxins and certain medications, particularly antivirial and anticancer drugs. Differntly from inflammatory pain, an alerting response of the nervous system to injured tissue NP serves no protective function in the body’s economy. Instead of functioning properly to warn of tissue injury, the nervous system malfunctions and, starting a vicious circle, becomes in itself the cause of pain. Nerve fibers surviving disease or injury are hyperactive, signaling pain in the absence of painful stimuli (a phenomenon called allodynia) or enhance the pain sensation (the so called hyperalgesia).
Currently available treatments for NP are either only moderately effective or associated with significant side-effects that restrict their use, especially in the elderly population where sedative and cognitive adverse events are often untolerable.
Therefore, there is a huge market potential for a novel drug with a large spectrum of activity and a benign side-effect profile.
The enormous economic potential of novel drugs for the treatment of nervous system and muscle disorders lays the ground for a successful development of the Company.
Neurotune’s team is determined to build a major player in providing innovative treatments for neuromuscular and nervous system disorders.
